2007/2008 Season Review

The 2007/08 season was one of huge importance for Stephen Maguire as he re-established himself at the very top end of the snooker pecking order. He was the only player other than Ronnie O'Sullivan to win two ranking titles, and surged eight places up the ranking list to a career high position of No 2. His breakthrough came at the Northern Ireland Trophy in Belfast, when he beat several other members of snooker's group of emerging talent. Wins over David Gray, Ding Junhui, Neil Robertson and Shaun Murphy put him into the final, where he beat Fergal O'Brien 9-5 to win his first ranking title in three years.

He then went on to win his third ranking title outside British shores. At the Honghe Industrial China Open in Beijing, he beat O'Brien, Barry Hawkins and Nigel Bond to reach the semi-finals, then edged out Ryan Day 6-5, having made the second official 147 break of his career earlier in the match.
